PDP governorship aspirant challenges Oyebanji over ₦130b road expenditure

A chieftain and governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Peter Obafemi, has challenged Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji, to provide evidence of the roads on which ₦130 billion was reportedly spent within a year.

Obafemi, who made the statement in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday while formally declaring his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election, said there was little to show across the state for such a colossal expenditure.

Governor Oyebanji had earlier claimed that his administration spent ₦130 billion on road construction and maintenance—an amount he noted was equivalent to the entire budget of the state three years ago.

The governor made the declaration while highlighting his administration’s achievements and expressing his intention to seek re-election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Reacting, Obafemi said the claim lacks physical evidence on the ground.

“Just go to the streets and look at what the government has done. The streets will answer that,” he said. “The Ekiti people should expect liberation from the wilderness. We have been in the wilderness for too long. In almost 29 years of our existence as a state, we have remained stuck.”

He added that the state is at a turning point and called for a new era of governance.

“Today, we gather at a critical juncture in our state’s history. We stand at a crossroads, where the path we choose will determine the future of our great state,” he said.

“I stand before you humbled and honored to declare my intention to lead Ekiti State forward.”

Obafemi lamented the enduring issues of inequality, injustice, and corruption, promising that his administration would focus on transparency, accountability, and the delivery of democratic dividends.

“For too long, the voices of the marginalized and oppressed have been silenced,” he said. “But today, we say enough is enough. Today, we rise to demand a better future for ourselves, our children, and our communities.”

Also speaking at the event, the Director General of Obafemi’s campaign organization, Mr. Kunle Ogunjobi, urged PDP members to remain resolute and committed to the party’s ideals.

“We are not just fighting for power; we are fighting for the future of our state, the welfare of our people, and the dignity of our party,” Ogunjobi said.

He assured the people of Ekiti that the PDP remains focused on providing responsible leadership, quality governance, and people-driven policies.

“We will work to revitalize our economy, improve our infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for all citizens,” he added.
