Senate investigates rumours of Akpabio’s impeachment
The Senate has initiated steps to investigate rumours regarding the purported impeachment of Senate President Godswill Akpabio. To that effect, the Senate has tasked its Committee on Special Duties with looking into the matter.
The Red Chamber said that claims of a planned impeachment are unfounded. Akpabio addressed the circulating reports during a plenary session, noting that the proceedings were continuing smoothly despite the rumours.
With a light-hearted response, Akpabio remarked, “We are here sitting down and doing our work very peacefully, oblivious of the mischief that is going on behind us. The fake news is hereby referred to the Committee on Special Duties.”
He further explained that such misinformation is a common occurrence, suggesting that it is often fueled by those seeking to generate online traffic for monetary gain.
“I understand that they are being paid by YouTube for high traffic. So, whoever spread this fake news might be profiting from it,” he stated.
Stressing the stability of the Senate, Akpabio added, “The issue of impeachment does not arise.” He urged the committee to investigate and report back promptly.
In response, Senate Committee Chairman on Special Duties, Shehu Kaka (APC, Borno Central), assured, “As the Senate President pleases; I will do the needful and report back, sir.”
Notably, there was no increased security presence at the National Assembly, countering claims made by some media outlets regarding heightened security measures in light of the alleged impeachment.
The incident marks yet another occurrence of misinformation surrounding Akpabio’s position as Senate President.
