Senator threatens to sue NNPP chairman for defamation
The Senator representing Kano South, Abdulrahman Kawu Sumaila, has threatened to sue Hashimu Dungurawa, chairman of the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), over alleged defamation of character.
The Senator accused the party chairman of bringing his personality under disrepute with allegations of corrupt practices, election rigging, and political backstabbing while granting a radio interview.
In a letter addressed to Dungurawa, Sumaila, through his lawyer Sunusi Musa SAN, issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the NNPP chairman to retract the statement.
“And a public apology to our client in two national dailies must be made. If you fail to accede to our demand within the stipulated time, our client will be compelled to seek legal redress in a court of law,” he said.
The NNPP Senator claimed that Dungurawa accused him of diverting public funds meant for water and the construction of a town hall stadium in Sumaila Local Government Area.
“The attention of our client was drawn to a radio programme being broadcast at Freedom Radiofrequency 99.5 FM, which is also on the Facebook page of the radio station and is being listened to from any part of the world. The voice clip is also published to various individuals and groups on WhatsApp and Telegram platforms in all parts of the world,” he said.
“It was alleged that our client collected the sum of USD$80,000,000.00 (Eighty Million United States Dollars) from Honourable Abubakar Kabiru Bichi, Honourable Member representing Bichi Federal Constituency, to rig the 2023 Kano State Gubernatorial election in favour of All Progressives Congress (APC) against his party.”
