Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, has said that his administration is ready to break the jinx of not conducting local council elections in the state, assuring that safety and security have been taken care of. Soludo spoke through the Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, Genevieve Osakwe.
He also said that the release of the timetable, announcement of eligibility, and process of recruitment of ad-hoc staff members of the Commission were to ensure that the September 28 elections are held as scheduled.
But in a swift reaction, the Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Ralph Okey Nwosu, dismissed the safety and security clean bill given by the state government, pointing out the resurgence of kidnappings and killings in the state of recent.
Nwosu urged Soludo to concentrate more on the protection of life and property of the citizenry than adopting a fire brigade measure to conduct council polls, after almost two and half years in office. He further pointed out that the rush to conduct the council polls was a measure to take other parties off guard.
He disclosed that the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) submitted a list of serving transition committee members rather than organise primaries to elect worthy and popular candidates.
According to him, the governor and the state electoral body should shift the date for the polls to allow parties time to plan, adding that the rush to conduct the elections has security implications, as opposition parties have been unsettled. Nwosu expressed worry that the amended clauses in the state electoral law are self-serving and in conflict with the extant laws and rules governing the elections, making it a nullity.
