Academy moves to bridge skills deficit among engineers
A Lagos-based firm, Engineering Resource Academy has advocated improved training for graduate engineers to enhance their capacity and meet the need of industry.
The founder of the firm, Dr. Omolola Adetona made the call in Lagos while speaking with journalists. She said there was the need to redeem the quality of young graduates of engineering by exposing them to quality trainings they lack in school and simultaneously teach them on practical aspect of what they have through partnership with engineering organisations.
Adetona, a past Chairman of Lagos branch of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers, said the firm was established to bridge the skills deficit, produce certified and well trained engineers in all sectors of engineering profession and ensure that relevant knowledge is transferred to all.
She said: “As a consulting engineering firm our goal is to improve knowledge and efficiency within organisations, increase manpower supply and certification. Provide quality structure for companies and train ambitious individuals by teaching, inspiring and supporting them towards achieving their certifications. We also ensure that young graduates who are undergoing the National Youths Service Programme are placed in engineering companies where knowledge can be impacted In them.”
According to her, the firm is a veritable platform where internship trainings can be learnt by taking students to established laboratories like the Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory to acquire the requisite knowledge required.
“ We provide on-the-field engineering training for graduate engineers in Lagos, and across other states in Nigeria through lectures, field exposures, industrial visits and facilitation of internship in engineering firms at no cost. However, they need to have some necessities like the Personal Protection Equipment (PPE), which they put on when we visit sites and industrial exposures. Also, they need the logbooks, which they need to use during the internship period.
Adetona further said about 43 young professional engineers have been trained and attached to industries for internship within Lagos.
