Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has said that he can’t wait to get started at Coventry City FC after joining from Nottingham Forest.
In a statement on Monday, Coventry said it was delighted to announce the signing of Awoniyi on a permanent transfer from Forest.
The 29-year-old striker has spent the last four seasons in the Premier League with Forest and has scored 21 league goals in 90 appearances (23 in 103 in all competitions).
After his unveiling by Coventry, Awoniyi spoke with the official website of the newly-promoted Premier League club, saying he is eagerly looking forward to making his competitive debut.
On his new challenge with Coventry, Awoniyi said: “I am very happy to complete my move to Coventry City.
“I am very excited about this season, and I can’t wait to get started. I am really looking forward to working with my new teammates.
“I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”
Awoniyi began his professional career at Liverpool and gained experience out on loan at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron and KAA Gent.
His exploits saw him then venture into the Bundesliga where he joined Mainz 05 on loan for the 2019-20 season before another temporary move to 1.FC Union Berlin for the 2020-21 campaign.
Awoniyi impressed with his performances which prompted Die Eisernen to sign him on a permanent basis in the summer of 2021.
He went on to enjoy his best scoring season as he bagged 20 goals, including four in the UEFA Conference League.
That form caught the eye of Nottingham Forest in 2022 and the Tricky Tees broke their transfer record for his signature.
The Nigerian international forward netted 11 goals in his first campaign at the City Ground to help them avoid relegation in their first season back in the topflight and also reach the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.
He was also part of the team that finished seventh and qualified for Europe in the 2024-25 season and has been an important member of their squad.
Awoniyi has also been capped 10 times by Nigeria, netting twice for his nation.
