Akwa Ibom to upgrade climate change unit

AS part of the move to ensure climate integration, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Emmanuel Udom has said that the state is currently working towards upgrading its climate change unit.
Speaking during the Post COP 21 Dialogue organised by African Clean Energy Summit at the Sheraton Hotel, Lagos, Udom, said that although he may not be able to give the exact figures in the budget for climate integration and adaptation in the state, assured that the issue of integration was highly captured in the budget.

Represented by the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Iniobong Ene Essien, Udom said, “We are trying to upgrade the climate change unit into a division, which means we would be able to bring in more professionals, people who are more knowledgeable in climate integration and adaptation.”
He said climate change was real and a global event. According to him, what affects the rest of the world affects Akwa Ibom too.
“Akwa Ibom is an oil producing State and there is a lot of gas flaring, emission, among others arising from the operations of the oil companies. We are already seeing the effects of climate change on the people and the economic activities.”
The governor explained that there were plans to set up committee to show seriousness on the issue and the reviewing of environmental policy was in view.
He narrated,  “We need to actively response to natural disaster and monitor the weather to be able to take proactive actions because prevention is better than occur. If we are able to monitor the weather we should be able to predict the outcome and put in place better steps towards integration. We are also looking at ways of protecting and sustaining the development of forest and we are putting in place actions that will reduce emissions. We are very particular about replacing trees that are taking off because of groundbreaking ceremonies.”
