For the sustainable building sector, experts have tasked practitioners on the importance of adhering to codes and standards in the engineering profession.

They also stressed the need to develop the nation’s industry-specific standards for building materials, and engineering sectors.

President, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Mrs Margaret Oguntala, led the charge at the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) conference entitled: “Adherence to Standard Practices: The Bedrock of Sustainable Development in the Building Sector,” held in Abuja. The forum is part of the global World Quality Week celebration, which promotes quality standards.

She highlighted NSE’s previous collaborations with SON and called for the strengthening of partnerships to advance quality standards in the engineering and construction sectors.

Oguntala lauded SON’s initiatives towards ensuring compliance with standards of materials and described the theme as timely. “We have collaborated extensively with SON,” she noted, stressing that NSE recognises the essential role of standards and codes for engineering professionals and their importance for safe and effective practices.

She also noted NSE’s ongoing progress toward ISO certification, underscoring its commitment to achieving international standards and best practices.

President, Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Prof Sadiq Abubakar, represented by the Vice President, Olu Ogunduyile, affirmed that adherence to standard practices is fundamental for sustainable development in the building sector.

Abubakar outlined SON’s responsibilities, which include developing standards for products, processes, and services, as well as maintaining laboratories and providing standardisation guidance.

He also acknowledged the collaboration between SON, NSE, and other stakeholders, emphasising the need to adapt standards for environmental and industry-specific conditions.
