Engineers partner navy on skills acquisition in building industry

The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Victoria Island branch, has commenced a skill acquisition programme for young engineers and unemployed graduates.

The move, which is in collaboration with the Naval Dockyard Limited, would provide short-term training in carpentry, welding/fabrication and electrical repairs to 15 young engineers.

The first of a three-part collaboration is to train young engineers and undergraduates in Lagos.

Speaking during the training, the Chairman of the branch, Mr. John Audu, said the initiative would enable participants acquire survival skills.

The participants, Audu stated were selected from the branch’s young engineering forum that includes, students, undergraduates and unemployed young engineers.

“When I was in school, I was taught some of the skills. It is good for people who are undergoing engineering training to experience carpentry, welding /fabrication and electrical repair. But that doesn’t mean they would become carpenters or welders. It will assist them to understand the subjects better.”

Audu further explained that part of the efforts is to boost the skills of young engineers through continuous education.

He added that the workshop teaches the core subjects of engineering both at the national and branch levels.

He said: “ More than 90 per cent of the trainings are free while sometimes the branch’s leadership pays for the programme.

“NSE-VI is indebted to the Admiral Superintendent of the Naval Dockyard Limited, Rear Admiral K.G. Levi and his team for their unwavering support for our young engineers. NSE-VI is working on several other areas of collaboration with the Navy.”
