The former Chief Judge of Anambra State, Prof Peter Umeadi, has urged Nigerians to imbibe effective maintenance culture to prevent loss of lives and property.

Umeadi, who spoke at the inauguration of the Institute for Promotion of Maintenance Culture and maiden lecture titled, ‘Revitalising Maintenance Culture in Nigeria: A Critical Challenge and the Path Forward’, held in Lagos, said the incessant building collapse and poor state of roads was due to lack of maintenance culture.

He noted that many institutions and departments have failed to carry out their duties, leading to abandoned projects and partially completed contracts amounting to billions of naira in the country.

The President, Institute for Promotion of Maintenance Culture, Prof Chidi Maduka, said the institution was formed to promote attitudinal change on the strategic importance of maintenance culture in the country.

Maduka said several buildings have collapsed in several states to the uttermost embarrassment of many well-meaning professionals in the country, and urged Nigerians to develop the habits of maintenance culture for the benefit of all.
