NIESV compiles data on land titling, seeks Land Use Act review

The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) has completed an assessment of land titling regulation across the states, which will enable developers and investors know requirements and processes for obtaining land titles in the country.

The Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV) has completed an assessment of land titling regulation across the states, which will enable developers and investors know requirements and processes for obtaining land titles in the country.

The document, which will go a long way in facilitating titling, documentation and real estate development, expected to be published and made available to real estate practitioners, investors and other stakeholders.

The institution has also reiterated its call for the review of the Land Use Act and removal from constitution to boasts housing provision.

NIESV President, Johnbull Amayaevbo, while making this call at the maiden edition of the NIESV Merit Award in Abuja, said housing has remained a critical challenge, adding that one of the areas of concern is the cumbersome procedure in obtaining a Certificate of Occupancy or Governor’s consent, which is a necessary approval before exercising one’s statutory right of occupancy on the land.

He lamented that this has not only hampered developmental efforts by private investors, but has given room for sharp and unscrupulous practices.

He said factors and circumstances that warranted the enactment of the Land Use Act of 1978 about 45 years have changed, hence, the need for its review in line with the present realities.

Amayaevbo noted that the institution will continue to spearhead strategic policy frameworks to drive the economy and pointed out that housing provision and delivery, infrastructure, social service provision and public service challenges are not insurmountable.

He said, “We would insist on the deployment of resources rightly and correctly during implementation, as this will guarantee efficient and sustainable development. We reiterate our commitment to step up contributions to housing delivery and national development. NIESV stands ready to continually facilitate exchange of ideas and innovations and share critical knowledge for improved real estate services and sustainable housing development.”

NIESV President observed that as part of NIESV contributions to good governance, the institution has concluded arrangements in partnership with the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, to organise a five-day workshop for political leaders elected in the general election and signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lagos Business School to organise a national conference on real estatethat would enhance job creation, partnership and collaboration on knowledge sharing for real estate and national development.

He explained that the merit award is a remarkable initiative of the national council of the institution as another significant contribution to the development of the built environment to recognise the years of an exemplary implementation of innovative programmes and solutions in the various areas of housing delivery and real estate development.
