Opposition political parties under the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) in Enugu State have urged residents of the state to continue to exercise their voting rights, saying that the state was one of the greatest beneficiaries of last weekend’s election that have changed the state political dynamics.

The state Chairman of the CUPP, Ogbonna Festus Okafor, told reporters, yesterday, in Enugu, that the massive turnout that saw the state recording one of the highest numbers of votes in the southeast during last Saturday’s elections was an indication that the people have become “politically active”.

He stated that the voting pattern by the people of the state during the National Assembly election was enough lesson to those who abuse power.

“We should, therefore, come out again in numbers and vote for the right candidate during the governorship election on March 11. As witnessed during the NASS election, it is now about the character of individuals standing for elections and their records of service,” Okafor said.

He insisted that the outcome of the National Assembly election in the state was a clear testimony that “power belongs to the people”, stressing that before now, “elections in Enugu were highly predictable’.

“But all that has changed; all permutations were made nullity by the outcome of the polls. We at the CUPP make bold to say that the success is well deserved, considering that the people have yearned for change since 1999. It has not been wonderful that a particular set of people dominated the political space since 1999. We say congratulations to the Enugu people; they are the winners; they are the real heroes of democracy,” he said.

He urged the people to ignore reports that the coalition had endorsed any governorship candidate, explaining that such claims do not “exist anywhere” rather candidates should use the remaining days of the election to market themselves to the Enugu people.

He said that the CUPP was solidly behind all the governorship candidates contesting in the election, as they have demonstrated zeal and seriousness to serve by the positive plans they have for the state.
