Aso-Oke sticking through all-ages

To say Aso-oke is an ancient landmark of Nigeria fashion heritage and identity would get the mind wondering how long ago – before colonisation or after?

The weaving and wearing of this fabric started in the 15th century in Iseyin, Oyo State and Ede, in Osun State both regions located in Southwest Nigeria, so, the fabric has been a ‘Nigerian thing’ long before British colonisation.

What is mind blowing is that after 500-years and still counting, in this 21st century, one would wonder why the fabric aso-oke has remained a fashion statement beyond the boundaries of its creation but also across regions in the country and most importantly the trending fashion identity of this season.

Have you seen what the Nigerian ‘star-girls’ are doing with the fabric this season?

Aso-oke is the new vibe. Did I say new? No, aso-oke is not new, it is the all-time and all-ages vibe and, in this age, and time, to be a today Nigerian star-girl is to wear and style the fabric with a 360-degrees slay queen original – hot and alluring, beautiful and elegant.

Of course, the men are rocking it but the women, young and old are printing their personal style signature on it.

The question is, what is it about after five-plus centuries? Why does the fabric remain an evergreen fashion statement for everyone who is proudly Nigerian?

Aso-oke is the ancient landmark of Nigeria fashion space!

Go around the world, search the nooks and crannies of the entire universe, and you will find nothing like it – aso-oke in its originality has remained a proudly Nigerian heritage fabric that cannot be replicated. Of course, some countries have tried to replicate the fabric with something that looks like it, but it-is-never-it. One touch, one feel, one close look and you’d know it is not the organic Nigerian fabric solely hand-woven by skilled men and women of the soil and in the soil.
