The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into a mourning mood with the death of Fabian Adibe. It is a double tragedy for the industry, which last week lost Olusegun Akinremi, popularly known as Chief Kanran. Within the span of two weeks, the industry lost two greats.

Adibe, best remembered for his commanding role as Ogbuefi Uzowulu in the classic NTA adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, passed away peacefully at 82 in the early hours of Wednesday. His death comes barely a week after Yoruba film icon, Chief Kanran, 70, was laid to rest, leaving Nollywood reeling with grief.

Adibe was a trailblazer of English-language Nollywood, featuring in more than 300 productions including Slave Warrior, White Kingdom 2, and Fathers. His career spanned both local and international projects, cementing him as one of Nigeria’s most versatile actors.

Chief Kanran, on the other hand, was a towering figure in Yoruba theatre and cinema. From his unforgettable stage roles in Langbodo and Kurunmi to screen classics like Efunsetan Aniwura and Bata Wahala, he embodied the richness of Yoruba storytelling.

The deaths of Adibe and Kanran are not just personal tragedies but symbolic of a fading generation that built the foundation of Nollywood. Both men bridged stage and screen, tradition and modernity, and inspired countless younger actors who now carry the torch.
