Decorating With Cleaner Air In Mind
CARPETS give a warm and welcoming feeling a living space. It is one way to enhance the look of a place such as the living room, bedroom or hallway.
At this period of the year characterised by heavy floating of dust in the air, carpets are bound to accumulate dust. With carpeting, it is almost impossible to control dust. They are a breeding ground for dust and other allergens.
While dust on other types of flooring such as hardwood, tiles and linoleum are easily cleaned, carpets trap dust within the fibres. Shag carpets are the worst in this consideration.
For dust-sensitive persons, especially those that have allergies or asthma, dusty carpets can precipitate attacks, thereby making life miserable for them. A dusty, dirty carpet will throw up particles every time it is walked upon, which can aggravate such conditions.
By keeping carpets clean and free from dirt, the household can enjoy cleaner air as well as cleaner carpet, which can be very beneficial where general health and air is concerned.
One of the ways to cut down on dust in the home is by removing carpeting. Area rugs are better, but they, too harbour dust. Where this is not an option, carpets and rugs must be vacuumed. How often this needs to be done depends on how often vacuuming is done and environmental factors such as the type of streets and neighbourhood.
However, the best and easiest way to handle it is to vacuum frequently. Even if the carpet appears clean, there is a layer of dirt and dust building up that can cause irreversible staining over time.
Protecting it over time by using an air purifier in a particularly dusty home might be helpful. A good quality padding under carpet or rug will protect dust from collecting inside the piles and damaging the fibres.
