Aloe had shown outstanding results in treating facial edema (swelling). When used as a mouth rinse, it was effective for cold spores and lockjaw.
Recipe for homemade Aloe Vera gel
Pluck fresh healthy leaves from Aloe Vera plant, preferably the outermost leaves, as they are considered more potent.
Carefully peel off the outer green rind with a sharp knife. Just below the rind is the yellow green sap, called the latex or the aloin, which is an irritant.
On the other hand, the transparent part below the latex is soothing and imparts medicinal properties to the plant.
The residues of latex can be rinsed off with dilute vinegar. Scoop out transparent pulp with a spoon and place in a blender. Crush a Vitamin C capsule with the back of spoon and add to the gel.
Puncture a Vitamin E capsule with a knife and squeeze the contents over the transparent pulp. To a quarter cup of the pulp, add 500 mg of powdered Vitamin C and 400 IU of Vitamin E, blend and mix thoroughly. To obtain a perfectly smooth gel, filter it through cheesecloth.
The vitamins serve the dual purpose of enhancing the benefits of Aloe Vera and acting as preservatives.
Store the gel in sterilised, airtight containers. Gather all the ingredients and apparatus before scooping out the pulp, because Aloe Vera oxidises in the air and therefore fast processing is mandatory.
Refrigerated gel can be stored for a couple of months.
