ON Saturday October 24, Abayomi Gbenga arrived the National Stadium, Surulere, to compete in the Lagos leg of the Gulder Ultimate Chase. His aim was to win either the grand prize of a brand new Hyundai Elantra car up for grabs or any of the 200 other consolatory items such as home theatres, television sets, refrigerators and generators. His hopes of competing were however dashed as he was deemed unfit to participate in the competition, which involved running from the National Stadium to the National Theatre in search of clues, on medical grounds. A disappointed Gbenga went home empty-handed and dejected.

In a surprising turn out of events, Gbenga emerged the grand prize winner of the brand new Hyundai Elantra car when the Owerri raffle draws of the Gulder promo were conducted at the Obari Ogwa restaurant and bar grand on Sunday, November 8, about three weeks after he was turned down from participating in the Gulder Ultimate Chase.

Narrating how he lost the chance to participate in the chase a few weeks back, Gbenga said: “I was at the National Stadium in Lagos for the Ultimate Chase and I queued up in the rain till it stopped. But when I went for the medicals, the medical officer that examined me said my blood pressure was too high. I thought it was a spiritual problem and I told her to repeat the test. She did it but the result was still bad. So they told me I couldn’t participate. I felt so bad and in that frustration I had to trek back home. It took me like one and a half hours to get home. I never knew that the disqualification was even in my own interest; that God did not want me to stress myself.”

The 28-year-old photographer attributed his emergence as the grand prize winner of the Owerri raffle draw to divine favour.

According to him, prior to receiving the information that he has won the car, he had prayed and asked God that morning to give him a big miracle.

He said: “The day I received the call that I have won a brand new car, I prayed that morning and told God that I want to receive a call that will transform my life and make me closer to you. But when the call came that I had won a car, I didn’t believe it was real because it looked as if it was a dream. When they told me it was real, I still didn’t believe it was happening to me. But now, I thank God that everything has worked in my favour and I thank God for his grace. I am very happy.”

He said the car would boost his business and earn him respect among colleagues and clients.

For those who are yet to win, he urged them to keep on trying, as they could be the next winner.

While presenting the car to Gbenga, the Marketing Manager, Gulder, Life, 33, More and Stout Category, Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Emmanuel Agu described the company as a socially responsible organisation that is always seeking for ways to reward its numerous customers.
