The recent salary cut by President Muhammadu Buhari, his vice and some state governors have been described by many as a move towards restoring the confidence of hopeless Nigerians.

Speaking on the issue, the Executive Director, Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian law, Anyakwee Nsirimovu, said: “In the era of change, I think what the President and his team are trying to do is build trust and confidence that offers hope to a population that have been so battered, indeed, traumatized by political leadership that was meant to salvage them from the abject economic and social upheaval, to a new thinking”.

He noted that with the present situation in the country, a sensible vision that is practicalized by sowing seeds of hope matters much, which the salary cut and other such actions by the president represents.

Similarly a political analyst, Omenazu Jackson noted that the salary cut by the president was an indication that he (Buhari) realised the economic challenge facing the country.

He described it as a personal sacrifice that needs to be commended, adding that there is nothing wrong with that.

He said: “What the president did is a personal sacrifice but for it to be more effective at a time when most of pronouncements by public officers does not make impact in the lives of the common man, he need to back it up with law so that the cut can be accounted for”
