Following the killing of some men in Nimbo, Uzo-Uwani Local Council Area of Enugu State last year by herdsmen, a group, NsukkaUSA Inc. a socio-cultural organisation based in the United States of America, comprising indigenes of Nsukka recently donated multi-purpose grinding machines to the 13 affected widows in the community. The widows include Mrs Cyprian Akor, Mrs. Obunwa Oke Ajogwu, Mrs. Agnes Oke Ajogwu, Mrs. Ugwu Ogbu, Mrs. Adejo Nwagu, Mrs. Maxwel Eze, Mrs. Eze Sylvanus, Mrs. Odo John (Abro), Mrs. Ezema Benjamin, Mrs. Nwakaego Akogwu Utazi, Mrs. Omada Ajogwu Utazi, Mrs. Oyie Raphael Onyishi and Mrs. Mama Okoya.

The presentation ceremony which took place on May 26 commenced with a courtesy call to the palace of the royal father of Nimbo community, HRH Igwe John Akor in his residence at Ukpabi Nimbo. After the presentation of kolanut and short prayers by the traditional ruler, Dr. Charles C. Ugbor, in company of the President General and Secretary General of Nimbo Town Union, conducted the traditional ruler round the bus-load of the machines donated by the NsukkaUSA Inc.

Ugbor informed the traditional ruler that NsukkaUSA Inc had asked him to deliver the machines to the 13 widows who lost their husbands in the attack and having been grappling with the task of taking care of their family members. In his response, the traditional ruler thanked the NsukkaUSA Inc. particularly the leadership for coming to their aid when it mattered most. He, however, urged the widows to take good care of the machines to enable it last long. The traditional ruler further gave his blessing and nod for the handover of the machines to the widows. The machines were later conveyed to the compound of the Catholic Parish Priest at Oda Nimbo, where the presentation was billed to take place by 4pm.

At the venue of the presentation, the parish priest, Rev. Fr. C. Urama welcomed both the widows and the team that accompanied the machines. In his speech the leader of the delegation, Dr. Charles Ugbor, who delivered the message of NsukkaUSA Inc. to the widows, advised them to ensure that they take good care of the machines, in order to serve them better and longer. He said that the aim of NsukkaUSA Inc. in donating the machines to them is to help them generate income to support their families.

Later, the widows were called out by the President General of the community, while the Rev. Father Urama handed over the machines to them together with the receipts bearing their names and machines’ serial numbers. The machine meant for one of the widows who was remarkably absent at the presentation was received on her behalf by the Catholic priest. In their response, the widows expressed gratitude to the leadership of NsukkaUSA Inc. for the gesture and promised to maintain the machines as required.

It would be recalled that at the wake of the attack, members of the organisation have visited the affected families with relief material in form of food and clothing.

So, the recent intervention was aimed at providing a sustainable income generating mechanism for the families who lost their breadwinners during the carnage. It was disclosed that the leadership of the NsukkaUSA Inc represented by its President, Mrs. Evelyn Idoko, had arrived at the decision on the choice of intervention after due consultation with the affected widows, the Nimbo Town Union represented by Mr. Christian Nwodi) and the NsukkaUSA contact persons namely Dr. Charles C. Ugbor, Mr. Iyke Ugbor and Mrs. Charity Olemadi.
