Oba Gideon Adetoye laid to rest amid pomp

Ibefun-Ijebu in Odogbolu Local Council of Ogun State was agog recently as royal fathers, politicians, and business moguls trooped in to pay their last respect to His Royal Highness, Oba Gideon Olatoye Adeshina Adetoye, the Liken of Ibefun-Ijebu.

Oba Adetoye was buried on August 22, 2025, after an Interdenominational Service held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ibefun. Dignitaries present at the event included Femi Ogunbanwo, member representing Ijebu Central Constituency in the House of Representatives; Atinuke Bello; Otunba Bankole Habeeb Olugbile; HRH Oba Abdulrazak Adenugba, the Ebumawe of Ago Iwoye; Otunba Abdulrasheed Obadimeji, the Otunba Tayese of Ibefun, among others.

In his tribute, Obadimeji described the late monarch as “a meek and down-to-earth king who always wanted the best for the people of Ibefun.” He prayed for a kind-hearted successor to continue his legacy.

On his part, Olugbile said the death of the monarch was “a colossal loss to him personally and to the entire Ibefun community.”Prince (Dr.) Samuel Adetoye described his late father as “a man worthy of emulation, who meant well for everyone.”

Also, Prince Akinola Adetoye said his late father was “his strength, who pushed and encouraged him in all areas of life to become who he is today.”

The Burial Committee Secretary, Alhaji Adeleke Sarafa Lawal, who is also the Chief Imam Owode Community Mosque, Ibefun-Ijebu, described the late monarch as a Royal Father whose reign was marked by wisdom, compassion, and love for all his subjects. He added that the late monarch was a true leader, a father figure to all, and a custodian of Ijebu traditions and custom.

Born in 1946 in Ibefun-Ijebu to Prince Yinusa Balogun Adetoye and Princess Modupe Adetoye (née Oduwole), Oba Olatoye Adesina Adetoye was installed as the Liken of Ibefun after his appointment was approved by Aremo Olusegun Osoba on July 15, 1992. He was crowned on Saturday, December 19, 1992, after completing the traditional rites, and officially presented with the Staff of Office on Saturday, January 16, 1993.
