Henry Osime Omenai (1922-2015) 


OMENAI--17-1-15THE death has occurred of Mr. Henry Omenai. Born on March 5, 1922, he passed on to glory on January 12, 2015.

  The late Omenai attended Kings College, Lagos, after which he proceeded to Downing College, Cambridge University, England, and subsequently the Administrative Staff College, Henley, near Oxford England.

  Omenai served in the Royal West African Frontier Force, 1942-1946, as part of the West African Contingent to India and Burma. He was discharged with the rank of Warrant Officer Class II.

  He entered the Nigerian Public Service as Third Class Clerk in 1946. He was appointed Development Officer (Administrative Auxiliary) in 1949. In 1953, he was appointed Administrative Officer  (Administrative Assistant Secretary).  

  Omenai was appointed Federal Permanent Secretary in 1962. While in that position, he served in the federal ministries of Internal Affairs (1962-1965); Aviation (1965-1966); and Transport (1966-1967).

  He also served as Chairman, Nigerian Airways, Nigerian National Shipping Line, Nigerian Ports Authority, and Civil Aviation Training Centre, Zaria.

  Omenai voluntarily retired from the Civil Service on September 19, 1967, and went into the Private Sector where among other private ventures he was subsequently appointed Vice Chairman of the Institute of Directors, Vice President of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and Member of the Capital Issues Commission.

  The late Omenai was confirmed as a member of the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, in 1940 along with other students of Kings College Lagos, where he remained a staunch member until his passing. Whilst there, he served as a member of the Standing Committee, the Scial Welfare Service Unit and financially assisted a visually impaired girl through school and tertiary education. He was also a member of the CPA.

  He is survived by brothers, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
