
To stamp out piracy and copyright infringement in the nation’s creative industry, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has called for stakeholders’ synergy to develop the copyright system in to boost Nigeria’s creative economy.
The Minister/AGF made the call on Tuesday at the Seminar on Copyright Law and Policy for Officials of the Federal Ministry of Justice, in Abuja. Represented by the Director of the Legal Drafting Department, Mr Patrick Oyong, the Minister/AGF said that the seminar which was organised by the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) in collaboration with the Ministry of Justice was opening another vista for Nigerians and the country to continue to expand the frontier of knowledge in the copyright sector.
He noted that globally, copyright development is receiving significant attention and Nigeria cannot be seen to be left behind. The minister recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Copyright Bill into Act on March 17, 2023.
In his remarks, the Director-General of NCC, Dr John Asein, said that the main purpose of the seminar was to acquaint stakeholders in the creative industry with the global intellectual system and its role in promoting creativity and innovation. He added that it is also aimed at creating awareness of the mandate and activities of the commission and current issues emanating from the Copyright Act.
