How late start, boycott, poor organisation Mar The Headies Homecoming

Known as Nigeria’s most prestigious music awards, the 17th edition of The Headies Awards, which held at the Landmark Events Centre, no doubt, did not live upto expectation, as it was marred by a series of unpardonable mistakes.

From late start to other avoidable errors, the organisers failed to meet the expectations of event goers, dignitaries and international visitors who had come to see a super homecoming event for the show, which has been in America for two years.

The organisers had slated red carpet from 5:00pm to 7:00pm but the gate to the hall was not opened until 7:34pm, while guests, including commissioners glued to their seats until 11:02pm when the show finally began.

While the award ceremony had so many errors to think of, it however, recorded moments to remember as guests were treated to good performances. From Fireboy DML’s soulful acoustic set to a surprise joint performance by Olamide and newcomer Shallipopi, every act gave their best shot. Memorable moments included a medley tribute to Afrobeats pioneers, performed by veterans like 2Baba and Sound Sultan’s son, who made a touching appearance.

Davido won the Artiste of the Year and Digital Artist of the Year at The Headies, which recognizes African contemporary music and Afrobeats.Davido also took the stage to present the Next Rated award — an honour he described as “the most important” of the evening — to Odumodublvck. “I won this award 12 years ago, and I know firsthand the hard work and dedication it takes to get to this point,” Davido said. Odumodublvck also won best rap single.

Speaking with The Guardian, Zaaki Azzay said: “The Headies has over met my expectation; I am so proud of the Headies. We were there when it started. Ayo Animashaun is like a hero and I am happy The Headies was taken outside Nigeria. So, it was a good thing for them to go out and now that they are back.”

Speaking artistes rating Grammys above The Headies, he said: “How did the Grammys start? Nigeria may be shaky but the country is less than 100 years. We will get there. Grammys have all the structure working for them, but do we have the structure in Nigeria? No, yet we can achieve and rule the world with our music.”
