One of the biggest Korean Wave festivals, K-Pop, was held at the weekend with 18 groups participating.
The festival, which aimed at enabling a significant value for cultural exchange between Korea and Nigeria, was compelling to watch as Nigerians sang in Korean language and danced too.
Competing keenly in the singing category were Mary Isibhakhome who performed Chagwwi by Ahn ye Eun; Omamuyovwi Ohwdiasa (Wish by Gaho); Elo performed Meaning of you by IU. Also participating were Olonade Victor Joseph (Because you are my woman by Lee Seung Gi); Winner Abinye (This love by Davichi), Ebubechukwu Sofia Titus (Love wins all by IU).
Others performances were by Omi Samuel Chimaobi who performed Only one by Zia and Ayomikun Olokunwe who also performed Changgwi by Ahn Ye Eun.
In the dance category, Dance of the spirits (DOT) performed Hollywood action by Boy next door, Knight twins performed Danger by BTS, Jaelow Bobb (Standing next to you by Jungkook), The Luminas (Pink up by Katseye), while The Freshers performed Day Dream by Enhypen and others.
The audience determined the winners by a live voting via a QR code that was provided for casting votes.
At the end of the day, Kingsmen who performed Fake Love by BTS emerged the winners in the dancing category as well as the most popular group while Ibidudu who performed Changgwi by Ahn Ye Eun in the singing category took the first prize.
Speaking at the festival, The Consul General, Lagos Office of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Mr Lee Sangho, said the Korea Wave is no longer just a trend-it is a global cultural movement and its heart is K-Pop, a genre that has connected millions of people across continents through music, dance, creativity, and shared passion.
According to Sangho, “Today, K-Pop is enjoyed by fans in over 100 countries, and its influence can be seen everywhere from anticipated concerts like the BTS Comeback, and viral dance challenges to fashion, language learning, and cultural exchange. Here in Nigeria, K-Pop has found a vibrant home among young people whose energy, talent, we shall witness today.”
He assured that “the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria remains committed to strengthening the friendship between Korea and Nigeria through a lot of activities, and events like this remind us that despite our different origins, we can connect through mutual cultural appreciation.”
