Telecommunication giant, MTN Nigeria, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and advancing African storytelling through its continued investment in platforms that recognise, reward, and nurture creative talent such as Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
As part of its support for the continent’s growing creative ecosystem and participation in the 12th AMVCA, the Y’ello tel company sponsored the ‘Best Short Film’ category and recently presented the N5 million cash prize to the winning film, Hussaini makers Orire Nwani and Josh Olaoluwa. The presentation celebrated a remarkable achievement and highlighted the growing influence of emerging voices shaping the future of African cinema.
Speaking during the presentation of the cash prize to the winners, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Marketing Officer, Onyinye Ikenna-Emeka, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to youth empowerment and supporting the creative industry through platforms that spotlight emerging talent.
According to her, the telco firm remains committed to supporting young Nigerians who continue to break new ground through innovation, creativity, and storytelling. “At MTN, one of the things that we are so committed to is youth empowerment. We believe that the youth of Nigeria are actually the future of the country.
“When we see young people being productive and coming out tops in what they do, it speaks to their commitment and ability to move beyond boundaries. One of the ways we support the creative industry is through the short film category, and we are delighted to see deserving winners who are obviously on their way to great things,” she said.
For the creators of Hussaini, the recognition marks a significant milestone. One of the filmmakers described the award as a defining moment in their journey after several nominations in the category, noting that the win serves as both validation and motivation for future projects.
Beyond the Best Short Film category, MTN’s support for emerging filmmakers extended across AMVCA activities, including the Young Filmmakers Day and the #MTNFilmChallenge. Through the challenge, five promising filmmakers: Precious Aisa, Fitz-Williams Ochie, Ugwueze Jennifer, Anuyimika Ayomide, and Alexander Oshiame, received cash prizes totaling N4.65 million for producing compelling short-form films inspired by Nigerian culture, creativity, and everyday experiences. Two additional finalists also received consolation prizes in recognition of their efforts.
It needs to be noted that as Africa’s film industry continues to gain global recognition, MTN’s sustained support for emerging creatives is helping to amplify authentic African stories, unlock new opportunities for talent, and strengthen the future of the continent’s entertainment industry.
