Nigeria’s Head Coach, Adamu ‘Ejo’ Audu has apologised to Nigerians over his team’s scandalous 1-10 loss to Portugal in their opening game of the on-going FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Paraguay on Friday.

The Group D loss is Nigeria’s heaviest since it started participating in the competition. Speaking after the game, Audu admitted that his team met a better side, adding, however that they had learnt valuable lessons from the match. “All is not lost. We still have opportunities to make amends in two matches,” he said.

The African side started brightly and opened the scoring through Azeez Abu, but it was all downhill from there.Nigeria had managed to keep the fancied Portuguese scoreless into the 13th minute, but it all went downhill after that as they were steamrollered.

Nigeria had opportunities but weren’t clinical enough, while their opponents were the exact opposite. It was an unusual type of goal that kick-started the Portuguese goal-rush as Belchior scored directly from a corner kick.Portugal never looked back from there, with legend Madjer scoring the final goal of the match.

Africa’s other participants, Senegal, suffered an agonising 8-7 loss to Russia in Group C, who scored their final two goals within 20 seconds of each other. Nigeria face Oman today, while Senegal take on Belarus.
