Agbaje vows to punish Sonjika over xenophobic attack
The rematch of the celebrity fight between two Nigerian celebrities, Habib Badmus, popularly known as Portable, and Charles Okocha is one of the main attractions of the Season 4 of Chaos in the ring, which holds in Lagos on July 31.
The first fight between the duo ended in victory for Portable, but this time, Okocha says Portable will regret ever stepping on the ring.
“Portable won’t last more than two rounds in the ring,” Okocha said Tuesday during a world press conference held at Balmoral Convention Centre, Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja.
The season 4 Chaos in the ring will be held on July 31 at Balmoral Hall, Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos.
Tension rose inside the hall on Tuesday as Portable and Charles Okocha mounted the stage, exchanging hot words.
Another celebrity fight scheduled for the night is the bout between Okafor Victor, popularly known as Mr Real, against Adekunle Idowu simply known as Idowest. Like Portable and Charles Okocha, the duo threw jabs at each other.
Perhaps, the major fight that will be of interest to many Nigerians is the main event between Nigeria’s multiple award winning boxer, Taiwo Esepo Agbaje, and Ayabonga Sonjika of South Africa.
Agbaje declared Tuesday that he would punish the visiting South African on July 31 to show solidarity with Nigerians and other Africans, who were subjected to Xenophobic attacks in that country.
Godday Appah will face Lekan “The Engine” Muibi in one of the fights on the night, just as Rilwan Lawal will face Yusuf Adeniji.
Speaking at the occasion, Promoter of Chaos in the Ring, Dr Ezekiel Adamu, said: “Nigeria always produces world champions everywhere, but they never own those world champions. So, what we are building is a platform that ensures the world champions are owned by Nigerians and Africans as well too.
“By building that platform here, the athletes don’t have to travel to the West to actually get visibility. Now you get visibility right here in Nigeria. And that’s what it’s all about.
“The reason we are doing Chaos in the Ring is because Africans, Nigerians have always had world champions. Anthony Joshua, Deontay Wilder and Fabio Wardley all have Nigerian blood in them, but they don’t represent Nigeria. So, what Chaos in the Ring is doing is actually creating world champions that belong to Africans.”
On the impact of the promotion on Nigerian boxing, Adamu said: “When we started with Chaos in the Ring, boxers were earning as low as N50,000, which was the standard.
“On our card now, you can’t earn anything less than N10 million. So, it means that we have grown without the government. We need the government’s support to get to the next level, obviously. We haven’t gotten that yet, but I believe that in due time with the momentum we are building, it will become inevitable for the government to support us.”
