The elements couldn’t have written a better script, yesterday, as former Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, marked his return to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) with the winning goals in Kano Pillars’ 2-0 defeat of Sunshine Stars at the Sani Abacha Stadium.
Musa, Nigeria’s highest goal scorer in the FIFA World Cup with four goals in two editions of the global fiesta, who had been away from the local league for 14 years, performed as if he hadn’t been away, yesterday, with a fourth-minute goal that gave the Sai Masu Gidathe lead in their Week Five game. He made it 2-0 for the Kano team in the 51st minute to set the Sani Abacha Stadium crowd dancing.
The former Leicester City star missed what would have completed his hat-trick in the 70th minute when he missed from the spot following a dangerous play on him by a Sunshine Stars defender.
Musa, who made a brief return to the Nigerian league in the 2020-21 season before heading back to Europe, rejoined Kano Pillars last week alongside another Super Eagles star, Shehu Abdullahi, who started yesterday’s encounter from the bench.
Musa’s heroics took Kano Pillars to the seventh position on the NPFL table led by Rivers United, which defeated Akwa United 2-1 with Stephen Egbe (32nd) and Ndifreke Udo Effiong (85th) getting the goals for the Pride of Rivers.
Remo Stars, whose unbeaten run in the league had kept them atop the table, fell to the third position following a 1-0 defeat by Kwara United. Enyimba are now in the second position following their 3-0 defeat of Katsina United, in Aba.
Defending champions, Enugu Rangers, are fourth on the log after a 1-0 defeat of Abia Warriors, just as Plateau United, which beat Ikorodu City 1-0 in Jos, occupy the fifth spot.
In other matches played at the weekend, Lobi Stars defeated Shooting Stars 1-0, Heartland beat Niger Tornadoes 2-0; Bendel Insurance drew 1-1 with El-Kanemi Warriors, and Bayelsa United held Nasarawa United to a goalless draw.
