Amuneke rejects youth teams as 60 coaches battle for NFF jobs

Over 60 coaches have applied for the various technical jobs declared vacant by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The chairman, Technical and Development Committee of NFF, Chris Green made the disclosure in a chat with The Guardian yesterday, just as Chile 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup-winning coach, Emmanuel Amuneke has declared that he is too big to handle any of Nigeria’s youth national teams, hence his decision not to apply for vacant positions in the Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets.

Apart from the male senior national team, Super Eagles, the NFF recently declared all other national teams coaching jobs vacant.

“I won’t be able to tell categorically the number of coaches who have applied for each of the team, but in all, we have received over 60 applications as at this morning,” Green said yesterday. “We will commence the screening next week.”

Meanwhile, Amuneke, who failed to replicate his success at the 2013 Cadet Mundial with the Golden Eaglets when he was promoted to the U-20 cadre with the Flying Eagles, insists he is worthy of taking over the Super Eagles’ saddle.

He told Scorenigeria.com he would not apply to handle either the country’s U-17s or U-20s because his coaching career has gone beyond that.

“No, I am not supposed to be handling either the U-17s or U-20s any more,” Amuneke told Scorenigeria.com. “That’s reason I’ve not expressed any desire in applying for the jobs”.

Amuneke says he is not turning his back on his fatherland, but stressed in future he could still be available for even much more challenging duties for the country.

“For now no, but who knows in future one could still be available to help his country not minding if it’s on a bigger level,” Amuneke said.
