Arne Slot has spoken publicly for the first time following his departure from Liverpool, expressing gratitude to the club and its supporters after two years at Anfield.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the 47-year-old Dutchman said, “It’s been an amazing ride together with Liverpool. I am so grateful that we were able to win the league last season.”

Slot leaves the club after guiding Liverpool to a record-equalling 20th English top-flight title in his debut season. However, a fifth-place finish in the following campaign ultimately led to his departure.

Liverpool confirmed the decision in a statement released on Saturday, announcing that Slot had left his position with immediate effect and that the process of appointing a successor was already underway.

“Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is underway,” the club said.

The statement highlighted Slot’s achievements, including winning the Premier League title in his first season, reaching the Carabao Cup final, progressing to the Champions League last 16, and securing European qualification in his second campaign.

Liverpool’s ownership group described the decision as a difficult one, praising Slot’s contribution, professionalism, and leadership during his time at the club.

“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC has been significant, meaningful and, most importantly, successful,” the statement read.

The club added that while Slot’s achievements and commitment were deeply appreciated, both parties had concluded that a change in direction was necessary to ensure continued progress.

Liverpool also paid tribute to the Dutchman’s role in navigating one of the club’s most challenging periods, praising the empathy and character he displayed during difficult moments.

“We would like to formally acknowledge our gratitude for Arne, who will forever occupy a unique position in the history of this football club as the manager who secured Liverpool’s 20th league title,” the statement added.

Slot departs with the club’s thanks and the assurance that he and his family will always be welcome at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Slot, while Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and Lens boss Pierre Sage have also been linked with the vacancy.
