Delta State Commissioner for Sports, Tony Okowa, has reaffirmed the state’s readiness to host Super Eagles’ World Cup and African Nations Cup qualifiers when the COVID-19 induced suspension of all sporting events in the country is lifted.

Okowa said the cancellation of the Eagles’ qualifier against Sierra Leone in March was important for the safety of players and spectators, adding that Delta State will continue to support the national teams and the country’s sports development, even as the nation fights the deadly pandemic ravaging the world.

He also charged Super Eagles players to keep giving their best in national team assignments, saying the squad has what it takes to qualify and perform well in both the AFCON and World Cup.

“We are in close contact with the NFF to see how we can help the Super Eagles. Hosting the Eagles is one of our ways to lift the team as we are prepared to give them all they require for success.”

Okowa, who is a member of the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival Committee, declined comments on the commencement date of the festival, saying, “The Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports is in charge of the festival. They will decide on the date when the Federal Government and the Ministry of Health certifies that the conditions are right for sporting activities to resume in Nigeria.”
