Athletes to compete for 24 titles in new improved Asoju Oba Cup
A total of 24 titles will be at stake at the 50th Asoju Oba Molade Okoya Thomas Cup Table Tennis Championship scheduled to hold from November 26 to 30 at the Sports Bar of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.
Two new giant trophies were yesterday unveiled for winners in both singles categories, with the women’s laurel renamed Lady Olivet’s Trophy. In addition, there are two miniature trophies to be kept by winners in both categories.
There are also trophies in the cadet, intermediate and senior categories, while contests in the senior class will be in women and men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles events.
Other events scheduled for the six-day championships are para-table tennis, which is featuring at the Asoju Oba Cup for the fifth time this year, administrators, coaches, and sports writers’ competitions.
Speaking at the unveiling of the programme for the 50th anniversary, the son of the late initiator, Ayodeji Okoya-Thomas, said the prizes are worth waiting for in line with the tradition of the tournament.
“This of course will be the fourth, after 46 years, that is not being addressed by the initiator and sole sponsor of the tournament, Molade Okoya-Thomas.
“One of his greatest wishes while alive was that the family would continue the sponsorship of the tournament after his demise. We would therefore like to give thanks to God for giving us the enablement to continue this noble legacy for the fourth year running since he was called to glory,” Okoya-Thomas said.
A member of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Dr. Toyin Okenla Ojeaga, who represented Chairman of the Commission, Dr. Kweku Tandoh, thanked the late Molade Okoya-Thomas’ family for the continuation of their father’s legacy.
“We want to thank the family for the continuation of this championship. We want to say we are proud of them and hope they will continue in the sponsor of the championship,” she said.
