Bayelsa deputy governor tasks NOC on early preparation for games

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewurujakpo, has advised the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and sports federations to always think of how to prepare athletes early for international competitions.

Speaking at the opening of NOC’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, Ewrujakpo thanked the leadership of the Committee for their efforts at sports development, adding that the cardinal points of the state’s sports development is on maximising athletes’ areas of strength.

“The current President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee was elected here some 20 years ago and we are glad the Olympic family is back to town for its AGM.

“As you all know, we capitalise on our area of strength, which are wrestling, boxing and swimming and the result is there for everybody to see. Also, we must make it a point of duty to talk less and start early preparations in earnest for every games we participate in to achieve our desired goals.”

Also speaking, Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, represented by Permanent Secretary, Mallam Ismaila Abubakar, said the ministry would always support sports federations and their programmes.

Earlier, NOC President, Habu Ahmed Gumel, thanked Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, for hosting sports stakeholders in his state.

Gumel said the year 2020 was particularly a challenging one, not only for sports but for humanity in general, especially with the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, which is still ravaging most nations of the world.
