Boxer, Oyekola ‘Scorpion’ gets plot of land as reward for first round wins
The gift was given to the pugilist by the Chairman of the Oyo State Amateur Boxing Association (OSABA), Baron Akintunde Opaleye, whose brother, Gbenga Opaleye, is also the chairman of the Oyo State chapter of the professional arm, Nigeria Boxing Board of Control (NBB of C).
The OSABA boss while presenting the documents of the plot of land located at Oluyole Local Council to Oyekola, said: “This land gift was in fulfillment of the promise that I made to the boxer, that if he could record a first-round win in his national title bout against Taofeek Bisuga, I will surprise him.”
Scorpion not only got a first-round knockout in the national title bout, but he also repeated the same feat during the Ileya boxing fiesta at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium Ibadan against his Ghanaian opponent recently.
The development prompted the boxing promoter to speedily fulfill the pledge.
“Ridwan Scorpion was our boxer that we groomed from the amateur cadre here in Ibadan and since then I know he’s going to go places if he turned professional… the boy never disappoints me with how he is destroying his opponent within few minutes.
“When he was about to vie for the national super featherweight title belt against Taofeek Bisuga, I promised to give him a plot of land if he could finish his opponent in the first round; he also did it against Isaac Dawuona, a Ghanaian during Ileya boxing fiesta,” Opaleye, a renowned Ibadan-based property developer, noted.
Oyekola in his remark thanked the OSABA boss for fulfilling his promise, describing the gift as the biggest thing that has happened to him in his boxing career.
He promised to record more early knockouts in his subsequent bouts, especially in the GOtv Boxing Night 20, scheduled to hold on October 12 in Lagos.
