Cancer survivors rally for awareness at Lagos golf event

In a powerful show of solidarity and resilience, cancer survivors, advocates, and supporters will converge at the Ikoyi Golf Club on Thursday, 8 May 2025, for the third edition of the annual Swing Against Cancer Golf Day.

Organised by the Foundation for Cancer Care, the charity tournament seeks to raise funds and awareness for cancer prevention and treatment in Nigeria.

The event is expected to attract over 100 golfers competing in teams of four, with cancer survivors among those participating. This year’s edition aims to support two vital initiatives: the purchase of a mobile cancer screening bus and the provision of radiotherapy treatments for patients unable to access adequate healthcare.

Highlighting the day will be the presence of Farooq Oreagba, popularly known as “King Steeze”, whose story of surviving cancer has inspired many. His participation is expected to bring renewed attention to the importance of survivorship and the impact of early detection.

Beyond the competition, the tournament serves as a major fundraising platform for the Foundation’s outreach and treatment programmes. It also fosters a sense of community among individuals committed to reducing the burden of cancer across Nigeria.

Chairman of the Foundation for Cancer Care, Professor Chumy Nwogu, stressed the urgent need for sustained awareness and improved access to screening. “Early detection is crucial. With increased outreach and access to diagnostic tools, we can save lives and offer hope to many more families,” he said.

This year’s edition is organised in partnership with Concierge Sports, which has helped expand the tournament’s profile and community engagement.
