CMS grammar school, Queens college win Lagos first generation schools games

CMS Grammar School, and Queens College Yaba, at the weekend won the boys and female categories of the fifth Lagos First Generation Heritage Colleges Association (LAFGHECA) Inter–Collegiate Games held at the Sports complex of CMS Grammar School.

The championship, which, according to the organisers, was to awaken the spirit of co-operation and relationship among the first generation schools in Lagos, featured athletics, football, long jump, chess and scrabble, among events.

CMS Grammar School won the boys category with three gold, five silver and one bronze medals, St. Gregory’s College came second with three gold, four silver and two bronze medals, while Federal Government College Ijaniki placed third with three gold, five silver and five bronze medals.

In the girls’ category, Queens College, Yaba, took the first position with six gold, three silver and one bronze medal, Federal Technical Science College, Yaba, came second with six gold, two silver and two bronze medals, while Federal Government College, Ijaniki, came third with two gold, three silver and three bronze medals.

According to the organisers, the sixth edition of the competition will by Ansar-u-deen and Methodist Boys High School.Speaking at the championship, chairperson of LAFGHECA, Alhaja Risikat Yusuf, said the event was organised to encourage students and also discover hidden talents.

“LAFGHECA is delighted to organize the fifth edition of the Inter-Collegiate Games. Our major focus is to bring back the relationship among first generation schools and encourage students to be active in sports through this championship.

“As you can see, the result has been wonderful, as the students have given their best to emerge tops in their various events. The championship has been free from machinery based on the strict measures put to forestall such anomalies.

“First generation schools are not the only ones allowed to participate in the championship, the new generation schools, who met our standard and objectives, are allowed to be part of the event. Our focus is to promote sports in secondary schools,” she said.

Also speaking at the event, Managing Director, David Hall Sports Management, Shokoya Olayinka, said his outfit is happy to work with LAFGHECA in organising the championship, adding, “Giving students the platform to participate in sports gives them the chance to discover their talents and build on it at a tender age. I am delighted that the championship has been successful since it inception.”

Other dignitaries at the event were Director General, Lagos State Sports Commission, Ayo Agbesanwa and Major General Victor Babatope (Rtd), who was the chairman of the occasion.
