A total of 46 athletes and 10 foreign-based stars will fly Team Delta’s flag at the 2026 Commonwealth Games National Athletics Trials holding in Lagos.
Eight young athletes of Team Delta will compete in men’s 100m/200m. They are Osama Chibueze, Bright Gift, Saturday Godswill, Egbon Destiny Chinedu, Joachim Uyovwiyoma , Amreremenore Edesiri and Kwashi Aye Courage.
Onyia Jeffrey Miracle will compete in Boy’s Long Jump. In Boys 400m, David Udoh, Erhieyovwe Kennedy, Isaac Chukwuwike Miracle, Okocha lkechukwu, Ighogboja Michael, Onojuvwewho Moses, and Kwashi Aye Courage are the state’s flagbearers, while Ugherakpoteni Timothy will compete in Tipple Jump for Men. In Long Jump Men , Romeo Bernard, Gowon Gift Ogheneruno, Nkemakolam God’swill, Martin Ugwu, and Onyia Jeffrey Miracle are the athletes to watch from Team Delta squad.
In High Jump Men, Oddo Melvin and Ikweki Praise are the state representatives, while Daniel Ovie Possible is the sole representative in 110 Hurdles.
In the 400 Hurdles for Men, Ihwiwhu Oghenekowho John and Daniel Ovie Possible will slug it out with the U.S.-based stars, just as Abujei Chinedu will compete in Shot put men /Javelin.
Bosa David Kosisochukwu will battle in Discus Men alongside Ofuoku Nyerhovwo Ben, while Success Okeleke will slug it out with others in Shot Put. In Javelin men event, Ofili Ebube Franklin is the state flagbearer. In the women’s event, Team Delta has formidable stars to battle with the large pool of foreign-based stars.
In the 100m/200m, Jennifer Chukwuka Obi, Chioma Nweke, Ejiro Peter, Faith Chukwuma and Odika Chinonso, Ufuoma Merit are the stars to watch, while in the 400m, Elizabeth Olumide Titilayo and Innocent Mary are the state flagbearers.
In the 400m hurdles, Siviana Ossai is the star to watch, just as Emerald Makuachukwu will compete in Shot Put/Javelin. Ademola Temitope will try her luck in Heptathlon, while Kanu Emmanuella and Chukwuedon Christabel Oluchi will do battle in Discus.
Olise Favour Amaka will compete in Long Jump, while Anochie Rejoice is Team Delta’s athlete in 800m. The 400H/100H has Precious Uduvweghre, just as Ajagbawa Francess is the state athlete in Tipple Jump/ High jump event.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Delta State Athletics Association, Malik Itiako Ikpokpo, is confident the state athletes will give their best in the National Trials, which will hold at Yaba Technical College from June 20-22.
Ikpokpo, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Dunamics Icon, organiser of the Niger Delta Games, urged the athletes to believe in their abilities, emphasising that competition venues do not determine performance.
“Tracks are the same everywhere. What matters most is your confidence, preparation, and determination to perform at your best.”
He expressed optimism about the prospects of young athletes at the trials, noting that emerging talents could spring major surprises in Lagos. “I strongly believe a young athlete can pull a surprise in Lagos. We saw so many talented youngsters during the Niger Delta Games, and in a competition like this, one breakthrough performance can change everything,” he said.
