D’Tigers, seven others begin battles for ticket in Lagos tomorrow

Nigeria’s senior men’s basketball team, D’Tigers, will begin a chase for another Olympic Games outing tomorrow at the FIBA pre-qualifying championship, which holds at the Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Lagos.

The competition also featuring Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Mali, Uganda, Congo DR, Cameroun and Guinea will run till August 20. The D’Tigers, who have been in a training camp ahead of the championship, said in a statement yesterday that they are 100 percent prepared to fight for the Olympics ticket as host.

Nigeria is grouped in Group A alongside Senegal, Mali and Uganda, while in Group B are Cameroun,Tunisia, Guinea and Congo. Ahead of the championship, D’Tigers Coach, Mike Brown, who doubles as Head Coach of Sacramento Kings and NBA coach of the year, invited 23 players to a training camp where the final team was picked.

18 of the invited players are in the NBA, including late Super Eagles former assistant coach, Joe Erico’s son, Eric.
D’Tigers’ opening game holds tomorrow by 6.00 p.m.
