Former international, Joseph Dosu, has described Super Eagles’ 3-1 victory over the Desert Foxes of Algeria as a welcome relief to Nigerians, who have been struggling under the crushing economic situation in the country.

Nigeria has been reeling under the current recession, but Dosu said Saturday’s win was a welcome relief, even if temporary.

A brace by Victor Moses and another strike by John Mikel Obi ensured that Nigeria consolidated its leadership position in Group B with six points. Coach Gernot Rohr-led team had beaten the Chipolopolo of Zambia 2-1 in Ndola in the first match of the World Cup qualifier.

Speaking with The Guardian at the weekend, Dosu said the Eagles desired a good result in the encounter against the Algerians and they achieved it.

“It was a good result that the boys gave to us against the Algerians. I think the most important thing was the three points, which the boys gave us by playing well. They wanted the victory more and they got just that over a very strong side on the continent. This is the kind of victory Nigerians have always yearned for and the boys gave us just that. They truly made us happy and I give kudos to them.

“No doubt, the Algerians are a very good side, but we were able to utilise our chances and we punished them with those chances, which is very important for us,” he said.

The former Super Eagles’ goalkeeper said he was impressed with the team’s midfield, adding, “Mikel was fantastic, Etebo was okay. Onazi did a yeoman’s job, running everywhere, making sure the Algerians did not have possession.”

The Atlanta ’96 Olympic star, however, said the nation should count itself lucky for producing good goalkeepers each time she needed one.

“We have been lucky that Nigeria have always produced good goalkeepers whenever we needed one. When we were thinking of who will take over from Vincent Enyeama as he retired from the Eagles, Carl Ikeme came and did well. And while we were also thinking of who will replace injured Ikeme, Daniel Akpeyi stood for him and he too has started a good job. Likewise the other goalkeepers invited that included Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Dele Alampasu would have done a good job as well if they had been called upon. I think we are lucky that we have good goalkeepers in the country,” he stated.
