Edo wins inaugural Rugby Women’s Championship

Edo women’s rugby team has won the inaugural Nigerian Rugby Football Federation’s (NRFF) Sevens Women’s National Championship, which ended in Asaba, Delta State, at the weekend.

The team went unbeaten throughout the tournament to emerge champions of the tournament.

Team Edo secured victory in the tournament by defeating Imo Pyramids, Abia and Delta B team in the group stage. They went on to beat Benue Buffalos in the second round, before descending on Delta Team A in the semifinal to book a place in the final without a loss.

The Coach Williams Ntiense-led side went into the final as the favourites and never disappointed with a victory over Lagos-based tough side, ECO II, 17-0 l.

Although the final was played under a heavy downpour, it did not stop the Edo girls from winning.

Becky Okpitiko, who was voted player of the tournament, got a cash reward of N100, 000 for emerging the MVP and top try scorer in the tournament.

In other games, Delta A beat its B team 15 to 5 to clinch the bronze medal.

Speaking after the final game, Edo coach, Williams Ntiense thanked God and also his state’s Sports Commission for their support.

The coach said that more support and sponsorship from the private sector could help develop rugby and also make Nigerian teams successful on the international scene.
