Akwa lbom State is excited with its state selection as the host of the eighth edition of the National School Sports Festival, which has been scheduled to hold from November 10 to 21.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Aniekan Akpan, who received a delegation of the leadership of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) in his office on Monday, said the people of Akwa Ibom and the government of the state are highly passionate about sports and are eagerly looking forward to hosting the about 8,000 Nigerian school children between the ages of six and 17 years when they converge in Uyo.

“I am happy with your coming and the choice of Akwa lbom as the next host of the School Sports Festival. I love sports a lot and the people of Akwa lbom are very passionate about sports. That is the reason for the construction of Next of Champions now named Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. I assure you that the state will give NSSF all the necessary cooperation to stage a memorable festival.”

He said the executive was at the moment busy with plans and preparation for the lndependence ‎Day, and once that is over, the governor, Udom Emmanuel will be briefed on the festival.

Earlier, NSSF President, Mallam lbrahim Muhammad, had told him that Akwa lbom was picked as host because in spite of its talent base students from the state were not given opportunity to attend some of the festivals outside their home.

He revealed that because it is games for children of school age, most of the events will hold in school environment, with the football finals and athletics billed for the Uyo lnternational Stadium.
