A former Captain of the Nigerian Army Football Team, retired Maj.-Gen. Alphonsus Chukwu, has called for the sacking of the Super Eagles Coach, Sunday Oliseh.
Chukwu made the call in Owerri on Friday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while reviewing the performance of the Eagles so far under Oliseh.
He blamed Oliseh for the poor outing of the Eagles in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Rwanda.
Chukwu described Oliseh as incompetent to handle the senior team, saying the Nigerian team would face more embarrassments in future with Oliseh in charge.
“Sunday Oliseh should be sacked now; otherwise, he will destroy our senior football team.
“He does not possess both the technical skill and administrative capacity to handle the players,’’ the former skipper said.
The Super Eagles crashed out of the championship, after losing 0-1 to their Guinean counterparts on Jan. 19.
Chukwu, who was also the former Chief of Civil Military Affairs at the Army Headquarters in Abuja, said that Oliseh lacked the experience to build and nurture the Eagles.
He said that a good coach must have the ability to handle technical problems in a manner that would not affect the performance of a team in competitions.
“Our exit from Rwanda CHAN was a shame and if we must get it right in the other more challenging competitions, NFF must contract a coach with better experience to handle the team.’’
The former team captain noted that sports remained one of the activities uniting the country and should be given necessary attention to engage youths.
It will be recalled that Oliseh at a post-match news conference declared that the Eagles lost because of their poor coordination and the inability of the Nigeria Football Federation to pay bonuses to players.
