Former BBNaija star and two-time Nigerian high jump champion, Mike Edwards, began his boxing career on a strong note after defeating Jake Cornish in his first boxing fight.
The fight went all rounds at the Dublin Arena, but Edwards won by unanimous decision from the judges.
Edwards participated in the Misfits Boxing Cruiserweight division, which is run by English social media personality and Nigerian-born professional boxer, Olajide Olayinka Williams “JJ” Olatunji, better known by his stage name KSI.
The BBNaija star declared his entry into the world of professional boxing and made his debut on Saturday, August 31, 2024.
The former Big Brother Naija star reiterated his decision to join the cruiserweight division, marking a significant departure from his track and field roots.
In his statement, Edwards expressed his excitement about the new chapter, stating, “Breaking News: Excited to announce my entry into the world of professional boxing! Thrilled to join the Cruiserweight division roster on @MisfitsBoxing. Get ready for an electrifying debut as I step into the ring to showcase my skills and determination.”
Edwards, who previously competed as a British track and field athlete before switching allegiance to Nigeria in August 2018, boasts an impressive athletic resume.
With a lifetime best of 2.25m in the high jump, he clinched the Nigeria national championships twice in 2021 and 2022.
He also reached the final of the African Athletics Championships twice and narrowly missed out on the gold medal in 2022. Additionally, Edwards showcased his talent on the global stage as a finalist at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.
Now, as he embarks on this new sporting endeavor, Edwards’ fans eagerly anticipate his transition to the world of professional boxing, where he aims to make a mark with his skills and determination.
