Football Fives World Championship qualifiers to hold in November
The Nigerian edition of the qualifiers for the third Football Fives World Championship (F5WC) slated to hold in Beijing, China in May next year, will hold across Nigeria from November to December 2016.
The championship, which is aimed at helping talented footballers to sharpen their skills in the game, also gives grassroots players the opportunity to take their career to the next level.
Speaking at a media parley in Lagos yesterday, Head Competitions, F5WC, Yusuf Tijjani, disclosed that this year’s edition would be the biggest in terms of team participation, saying that the local organizing committee is taking the qualifiers to almost all the states in Nigeria.
“The championship can be referred to as (Monkey Post) in Nigerian palace. What we are trying to do is give Nigerian amateur footballers on the streets, who cannot play for the national team or clubs, the chance to text their skills globally. Any group of people who wishes to register can contact our partners, I-Sports Coliseum Limited, for inquiries. The qualifying series includes a three-day national final comprising 32 teams from the qualifiers. Winning teams from the six geopolitical zones would play at the national finals,’’ he said.
Tijjani said that 32 teams would be placed in an eight group format of four teams in each group, adding that 16 teams would qualify for the next round.
“The overall winners will represent Nigeria at the World Championship in Beijing, China, next year,’’ he said.
He also disclosed that plans were on for a national five-a-side league, saying that it would go a long way to complement the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) effort at promoting the sport in the country.
