Benin club sacks Nigerian coach following poor league form

Benin Republic football club USCN Cavaliers have dismissed Nigerian head coach Usman Abdallah after six months in charge, citing a series of poor results in the domestic league. Abdallah was appointed in August 2025 but leaves the club as it sits 16th in the Championnat National table, having accumulated 11 points from 14 matches, with two wins, five draws, and seven losses.

The club’s decision comes amid a challenging period in which the Cavaliers have struggled to move out of the relegation zone. Abdallah’s tenure follows a career that has spanned multiple continents, including Africa, Asia, and Europe, both as a player and coach.

Abdallah won the Nigeria Professional Football League title with Enyimba in the 2018/19 season and guided the club to the CAF Champions League group stage the same year. His playing career included stints with Nigerian clubs Sanka Vipers, UNTL, Rocks, Stationery Stores, and Mogas 90, as well as spells abroad with Al Arabic FC and Bayer Leverkusen, Jurong FC, Khalsa FC, Gombak United FC, Sheikh Russel in Bangladesh, and Kalantan FC in Malaysia.

He concluded his playing career in France with Bollene FC and FC Sete in 2006.

As a coach, Abdallah has managed teams in France, Asia, and Nigeria. He holds UEFA B and A licences, attended CAF coaching courses, and completed strength and conditioning certification in Australia. He has also earned coaching qualifications in France, Singapore, and Spain, including the LaLiga Coaching Certificate.

In Nigeria, Abdallah has served as an assistant and head coach with Kano Pillars and Enyimba International FC, where he led the side to multiple league titles and reached the semi-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup. He is currently the third assistant coach for the Super Eagles.

USCN Cavaliers’ management has not provided further comment on the appointment of a replacement, leaving the team to continue its campaign in the relegation zone.
