Cameroon icon, Eto’o, boosts Flamingoes on arrival in South Africa

Nigeria’s U-17 girls, Flamingos, arrived in Pretoria, South Africa, yesterday, for their 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup second round, first leg qualifier against their South African counterparts, Bantwana, scheduled for Saturday.

On arrival at the OR Tambo International Airport in the early hours of yesterday, they met with four-time African Player of the Year, top scorer of the Africa Cup of Nations till date and President of Cameroon Football Federation, Samuel Eto’o Fils.

Eto’o shook hands with the young ladies and left them with words of encouragement, after a group photograph.

For the match against South Africa, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected Kenyan officials as arbiters with kick off fixed for 3.00 p.m. South Africa time (2.00 p.m. Nigeria). It will hold tomorrow at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital.

There are 19 players in Coach Bankole Olowookere squad, with goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma, defenders Hannah Ibrahim and Jumai Adebayo, midfielders Shakirat Moshood and Muinat Rotimi, and forwards Harmony Chidi and Chisom Nwachukwu included.

While 2022 FIFA World Cup bronze medallists Nigeria drew bye to the second round, Bantwana crushed their counterparts from Gabon 21-2 on aggregate.

Both teams will battle things out in the return leg at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne-Remo on March 15, with the winner on aggregate progressing to the third round of the qualification campaign.

This year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup will be hosted by Morocco from October 17 to November 8. Africa to present five teams (including host nation Morocco) at the finals, which has been expanded to a 24-nation championship.

The players in the team are Christiana Uzoma, Onyinyechi Opara, Hannah Ibrahim, Jumai Adebayo, Temilade Fafore, Shavih Istifanus, Taiwo Adegoke, Shakirat Moshood, Muinat Rotimi, Azeezat Oduntan, Philomena Ochanya and Aishat Animashaun.

Others are Elizabeth Boniface, Queen Joseph, Olamide Olanrewaju, Chisom Nwachukwu, Harmony Chidi, Favour Iheagwaram and Christiana Sunday.
