Students, alumni, and community members converged in Ekpoma, Edo State, for the third edition of the Annual Late Sir Peter Akinhonmi Eigbedion (KSM) Football Competition, a week-long tournament that celebrated sportsmanship, unity, and legacy.
The competition, which began on March 23, 2026, and ended on March 31, witnessed increased participation and improved organisation, reflecting its growing importance within the Ambrose Alli University Secondary School community.
The closing ceremony attracted prominent personalities from the academic, medical, and traditional institutions. Among them was the Vice Chancellor of Ambrose Alli University, Prof. (Mrs.) Eunice Omonzejie, who chaired the ceremony and was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Osagie Ekhator.
Also present were Dr. Festus Aisabokhale, Chief Medical Director of Ofure Medical Centre, Ekpoma; Dr. Peter Akhideno, Special Guest of Honour and Consultant Specialist at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital; and Dr. Cyril Erameh, Consultant Internal Physician and former Executive Director of the Lassa Fever Institute at the same hospital.
Traditional representation came from the Onogie of Irrua and Okaijesan of Esanland, His Royal Highness Alhaji W. O. Momodu II, who was represented by Chief Dr. Christopher Igene and other palace chiefs.
The event also drew members of the University Secondary School Old Students’ Association (USSEOSA), led by Home Branch Chairman Mrs. Cordelia Aigbevboile, as well as student leaders, including the President of the Ambrose Alli University Medical Students Association (AAUMSA), Comrade David Ohiwerei, and the association’s Sports Director, Mr. Daniel Omoruyi.
Organised under the auspices of USSEOSA and fully sponsored by Dr. Andrew Oseghale Eigbedion, an alumnus of the 1992 set, the competition was described as a platform for youth development through sports.
The Principal of Ambrose Alli University Secondary School, Mrs. Fidelia Ndudi Ajuwa, served as Chief Host and was commended for her role in ensuring the smooth organisation of the tournament.
Matches were played at the school’s football field, with teams displaying high levels of skill and competitiveness. The highlight of the tournament was the final match between the SSS1 and SSS3 male teams. SSS1 took an early 2–0 lead, but SSS3 mounted a comeback to equalise before losing 3–2 on penalties.
In the overall standings, the SSS1 male team emerged winners in the senior category, while the SSS3 female team clinched the female title. At the junior level, JSS2 male and female teams dominated their respective categories.
Individual awards, including Most Valuable Player (MVP) and highest goal scorer, were presented to outstanding participants.
Speaking at the event, organisers emphasised the importance of teamwork, discipline, resilience, and unity, noting that the competition continues to serve as a tool for strengthening community bonds and inspiring young talents.
The annual tournament, held in honour of the late Sir Peter Akinhonmi Eigbedion, has continued to grow as a symbol of legacy and community development in Ekpoma.
