This weekend, the city of Lagos will host the much-anticipated eighth edition of the Habeeb Okunola Unity Cup, now officially rebranded as Akosin’s Cup 2025.
The tournament will hold at the Femi Gbajabiamila Stadium in Aguda, Surulere, over two days of football, beginning today and ending tomorrow. The competition this year will highlight the incredible talents of four prominent youth academies, each vying for the coveted title and showcasing their skills on a grand stage. The participating teams include the reigning champions, Habtob Academy, eager to defend their title, along with R2 Finesse Academy, known for their strategic gameplay, High Performance Academy, recognized for their robust physical style, and Young Boys Academy, who are poised to surprise as potential dark horses in the tournament.
Kickoff for each day’s matches is scheduled for 12 noon at the stadium’s main bowl, promising an action-packed lineup that football enthusiasts won’t want to miss. Organisers have worked diligently to create a festive atmosphere, encouraging supporters to engage with the teams and experience the excitement of grassroots football.
Previously named in honor of the dedicated philanthropist, Dr. Habeeb Okunola MON, OFR, the President of CINI Holdings, the rebranding to Akosin’s Cup reflects a new era while maintaining the core mission of nurturing young football talents and promoting values of sportsmanship among participants. This tournament not only emphasises competitive spirit but also strives to cultivate camaraderie and unity among the various football academies in Lagos.
Over the years, the Habeeb Okunola Unity Cup has earned a reputation as a prestigious platform for emerging talent, attracting scouts from top clubs who are keen to discover the next generation of football stars.
Organisers highlight that the tournament serves a dual purpose: while winning trophies is important, the primary focus is offering young athletes the opportunity to showcase their abilities and gain exposure to the wider football community.
According to the organisers, admission to the Akosin’s Cup is free, with gates opening at 11:00 AM each day, allowing fans ample time to arrive and secure the best viewing positions. Football enthusiasts are encouraged to come early and immerse themselves in the electrifying atmosphere.
