The West Africa Golf Tour has partnered with Supersport to broadcast the first inaugural tournament starting on February 25 at the IBB International Golf &Country Club in Abuja.
Supersport, as the official broadcast partner of the Tour, will cover all events of the season, marking the first time ever that the full schedule of golf tournaments staged by the West Africa Golf Tour will be shown on the TV channels along other golf tours around the world.
In what could be considered an event of rare proportion, the West Africa Golf Tour would host one of the biggest golfing mix of professionals and amateurs in a four-day event at the IBB International Golf & Country Club, Abuja, from February 25 to 28, 2016.
The West Africa Golf tournament is an invitational event that will feature a field of 120 professionals and 84 amateur golfers from the region and other African countries.
Professionals must be members of the Tour and registered for the event not later than three weeks before the opening to compete for the prize purse of $50,000 or its naira equivalent at CBN prevailing market rate.
The pros would take to the tee on Thursday and Friday – as they vie for the glory of making a cut of the last 50 and tie– and ultimately winning the one-of-a-kind tournament.
Amateurs would stick their tees in the turf on Saturday, as half of them make cut. The 50 field professional players who make cut would walk the fairways alongside the last 42 amateur players, in a final round on Sunday.
The Tour will stage the next event immediately after the inaugural tournament and thereafter on a monthly basis in back to back weeks.
Speaking on the event, the President of West Africa Golf Tour, Emeka Okatta, said the Ideology and drive that inspired this initiative is a totally different one.
“We are here to develop the game of golf in our region by building a viable platform to grow and expose professional golf on this side of the ocean. We are kept busy grooming the next big deals to stump the professional golf yard in a matter of decade or less, through the school golf education programme and we are delighted to have the sports media giant, Supersport, throwing their weight behind the West Africa Golf Tour.
“We are confident that the broadcasting of the Tour will engage fans and supporters and attract sponsors to enjoy coverage from marquee holes in the golf courses where tournaments will be staged,” Okatta added.
