FULL LIST: Lookman, Troost-Ekong nominated for African Player of the Year award
Super Eagles duo of William Troost-Ekong and Ademola Lookman are in the race to emerge as the African Player of the Year award after being nominated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
CAF on Thursday evening released the list of nominees for various categories of the 2024 awards on its official website.
Lookman, who is the only African nominated for the 2024 Ballon d’Or made the shortlist alongside Ekong who was Player of the Tournament as the Eagles came second in the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON)in Ivory Coast earlier this year.
Atalanta attacker, Lookman scored three goals and contributed two assists in the tournament while Troost-Ekong also hit the back of the net thrice despite being a defender.
Lookman was the major reason Atalanta won their first ever European trophy after scoring a hat-trick in the final of the Europa League to help his side thrash Leverkusen 3-0.
CAF also on Thursday revealed the date it will name Victor Osimhen and Asisat Oshoala’s successors as the male African Footballer of the Year and the female version.
CAF in a statement on its official website on Thursday said the 2024 African Footballer of the Year will emerge on December 16.
“The #CAFAwards24 will be hosted in the tourist city of Marrakech, Morocco on 16 December, 2024,” the Africa’s football governing body announced.
“This is the third time in a row that Morocco is hosting the ceremony after a glittering star-studded African fanfare last year. CAF will confirm the starting time of the #CAF Awards 24 in due course.”
The reigning African Footballer of the Year is Nigerian forward, Osimhen (men category), with his compatriot, Asisat Oshoala also claiming the honours in the women’s category.
